NEAD has produced a brand new global learning DVD resource for Primary Schools called Making Connections: global learning activities.

The We Are Norfolk: West project in King’s Lynn saw NEAD’s World Voices visiting six local primary schools. Six different countries were explored in terms of their geography, history, culture, traditional costume, music, dance and food. The cookery and dance activities are highlighted in 12 short films, guided step-by-step by the World Voices. Each activity increases pupils’ understanding of different countries and cultures.

After the World Voices’ visits the schools came together at a One World Day celebration to share what they had learned, produced and rehearsed. The pupils’ traditional dance presentations, in full traditional costume, also feature on the DVD.

After 22 years in its present office on Exchange Street, NEAD is moving… round the corner, to the Charing Cross Centre on St John Maddermarket in Norwich, from September 1st 2009. The Charing Cross Centre is a trustee-owned centre for organisations caring in and for the community, with a strong educational emphasis. Perfect!

Our email and telephone numbers will remain the same, but we are leaving our fax machine behind.

Other residents of Exchange Street have also moved. The Norwich Community Coop Credit Union (NCCCU) and freelance development consultant Helen Derbyshire have moved to Boardman House, on Redwell Street, up St Andrews Street. NCCCU maintains the same opening hours, phone and email. Banana Link have already moved to Sackville Place on Magdalen Street.

NEAD is also opening it’s third office in Great Yarmouth, hiring a new staff member, Rosie Walker, for the We Are Norfolk project: East. More details of this to come.

NEAD will launch We Are Norfolk in Great Yarmouth and across East Norfolk this year with funding for three years of support from the Department For International Development.

For the last year, NEAD has been working hard in King’s Lynn and West Norfolk setting up and managing our innovative We Are Norfolk project. Now, we have been given a great endorsement of its success with the news that with funding from DFID we will be able to extend the project in the East of the county too.

The project enables us to work closely with all the primary schools in the region, supporting global learning in the classroom across the full range of curriculum subjects. We will also work with local people from different backgrounds to meet their training needs and develop their skills to become classroom facilitators, exploring the similarities and differences between different cultures using music, dance, food, arts and a range of fun activities. Opportunities to support links between schools and communities, both local and global, will be taken, and we hope to continue to be part of local events and activities with a global or community theme.

On Thursday 19th March 2009, DFID Minister Ivan Lewis visited NEAD and development education projects in Norwich. Mr Lewis heard about Hellesdon High School’s environment work and achievements, pledged support for Fair Trade in Norfolk (FTiN) and opened Banana Link’s new office.

Mr Lewis, a recently-appointed Minister at DFID (Department for International Development), visited NEAD to see global education first-hand and learn about what Development Education Centres do. Fred Corbett, assistant director for Norfolk Children’s Services, also attended the meeting which discussed project work, partnerships, the development climate of Norfolk and possibilities for funding reform for Dev Ed work.

During the evening a consultation was held on a new DFID White Paper to be entitled Eliminating World Poverty: Assuring our Common Future. There are 5 main sections to the draft white paper: building our common future, global economic growth, climate change, fragile and conflict-affected countries and international institutional reform. The Eliminating World Poverty consultation document can be viewed and responses to it given at the DFID website. During October 2008 we launched our latest project, We Are Norfolk (WAN). Four months on, we’re ready to post the first We Are Norfolk Project Update (PDF, 337 KB).

Highlights from the update include the most requested pre-translated school’s letters (welcome letter, closure, trips/visits, meeting requests, and so on), having been sourced for schools to use freely.

The WAN project’s first session by a NEAD World Voice, Kwai Li, Chair of West Norfolk & District Chinese Association in King’s Lynn, took place at St German Primary School in January. Kwai gave a presentation and shared an artefact display about China and the Chinese New Year, covering topics including celebration, culture, music, history, everyday life and traditions, tea-drinking traditions, and dance.

80 Dishes from Around the World was a hugely popular event. The West Norfolk Partnership website has pictures, taken on the day (select the Food Fortnight tab). As well as co-sponsoring the event, NEAD teamed up with King’s Lynn ethical café Nourish to offer a table presenting Fair Trade, with delicious samples and free fairly-traded gifts for children. Entertainment was provided throughout the day by various West Norfolk community groups.

The We Are Norfolk project aims to raise achievement through working with global issues and community cohesion, by offering:

• Professional development sessions embedding the global dimension and community cohesion into the curriculum for schools, clusters and other groups
• Access to NEAD’s World Voices network – facilitators, workshop leaders and speakers from different backgrounds who bring the world dramatically alive in the classroom
• Artefact boxes from different countries such as Poland, Portugal, Lithuania, Ukraine, Russia, Egypt and China
• Liaison with our multilingual project Coordinator to support community cohesion or global schools linking initiatives in your school
• Innovative USB pen drive information resource compatible with interactive white boards
• Lesson plans and activities across the curriculum
• Free borrowing from our King’s Lynn library of books, resources and activity packs.

At NEAD’s 2008 AGM, Humphrey Moyo shared his experience of life as a refugee from Zimbabwe where he was a Head Teacher, but was forced to leave due to political and physical threats. Humphrey is now one of NEAD’s World Voices, going into Norfolk schools to run workshops on refugees and asylum seekers. Zimbabwe is in our minds especially now due to the current political and humanitarian situation, and as we watch the West’s response to their needs.

Humphrey used a presentation available from an online community for Zimbabwean activists.

In his schools workshops, he looks at popular misconceptions using statistics from the Refugee Council website.

There are many websites that carry up-to-date news about Zimbabwe, such as All Africa, The Zimbabwe Situation and South African Broadcasting Corporation to name a few.

In 2007 Benny Wenda, the exiled figurehead of the Free West Papua Campaign, told us about the situation in West Papua as its native people struggle for independence from Papua New Guinea and freedom from oppression. An International Parliamentarians for West Papua group was launched on 15th October 2008 in the House of Commons, London, with traditional West Papua music & dance performed in Parliament Square by West Papuans from the Netherlands. The launch in Parliament was co-hosted by Rt. Hon. Andrew Smith MP & Lord Harries. The aim of the group is to co-ordinate international parliamentary action on West Papua.

NEAD is looking to recruit new World Voices, as we expand our services in West Norfolk, from our new King’s Lynn office. If you think that you could share your knowledge of another country using stories, music, puppets, dance, arts and crafts, or another medium, please contact Inna Melnyk (We Are Norfolk project Coordinator for West Norfolk). We are interested also in hearing from anyone who is able to run interactive workshops on development issues in West Norfolk.

The first World Voices training session will take place on Saturday 13th December, 10 AM (for half a day) at The Discovery Centre, Columbia Way, King’s Lynn Whitefriars CofE Primary School, Whitefriars Road, King’s Lynn, PE30 5AH. As part of the We are Norfolk project, NEAD will be organising events for the wider community with support from the Equalities and Human Rights Commission.

Firstly, we will be working with Seachange Arts and the Great Yarmouth International Association to offer a host of exciting activities and performances throughout October 2008 for Norfolk Black History Month and the Out There International Festival (25th October to 2nd November 2008). We’ve written in greater detail about the events we’re supporting in Great Yarmouth.

The second event of the year will be part of West Norfolk’s Food Fortnight in King’s Lynn (1st to 16th November); the hugely popular Around the World In 80 Dishes food tasting event (16th November, Lynnsport, King’s Lynn) will be given some extra support from NEAD to ensure complete accessibility and a warm welcome to all. Our third community event of the year will take place in Thetford in spring 2009 - watch this space for further information…

NEAD is supporting events in Great Yarmouth during Norfolk BHM (Black History Month) 2008, as part of our We are Norfolk project. Highlights include the launch and weekly schools-work events.

The Great Yarmouth Launch of BHM 2008 on Saturday 4th October includes the Open Trade Network’s traditional African Market, with entertainment from the dazzling Capoeira Senzala.

The town’s BHM 2008 Finale (Sunday 2nd November, 12 noon to 10 PM) sees an international partnership in which BHM, NEAD, Out There International Festival and Great Yarmouth International Association combine forces to present a multitude of free events. Performing will be Moleque de Rua - Brazilian street kids from Sau Paulo who, in a dynamic stage show using innovative, self-made instruments from recycled material, concoct excitingly original sounds mixing samba, traditional rhythms and rock, funk and hip-hop! Local favourites Anna Mudeka and José Ferrera add to the diversity and internationalism, promoting and celebrating Great Yarmouth’s international links and local international cultures.

Most public events take place in the Market Place in a specially-constructed covered ‘village’.

NEAD is delighted to appoint Inna Melnyk to the post of Schools Project Worker for the new We Are Norfolk project: West Norfolk. Inna will start with us on 4th August 2008.

Inna comes from Ukraine, where she attended agricultural university and achieved a degree in accountancy. She came to the UK in 2001 as a student and worked on a farm in Upwell. After some years there, she moved to Kings Lynn and started to volunteer at KLARS (Kings Lynn Area Resettlement Support). In 2004 she became a project worker for them.

ITV Local TV produced an episode on Inna’s story as an ‘incomer’ to Norfolk.

We look forward to welcoming Inna to the NEAD team.

This booklet of global educators’ case studies has been published by the DEA (Development Education Association) backed by the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown who wrote the foreword. NEAD is pleased to contribute with experiences from the Student’s For Global Action Conferences (see pages 26- 29) and images used throughout the publication.

The booklet was produced to celebrate the DEA’s 15th Anniversary and to illustrate the tools available to practitioners seeking to promote education for a just and sustainable world. DECs (Development Education Centres) and other DEA members showcase and discuss their projects stating how well they achieved their aims, what will happen next and their reflections.

The booklet is available to buy from the DEA for £5, or can be downloaded for free.

NEAD has been successful in a large-scale funding application; the Department for International Development has awarded money for work in King’s Lynn and West Norfolk in Primary Schools, on issues around ‘new communities’ (economic migrants, BME communities , refugees and asylum seekers, etc.), for 3 years.

We also received some funding from the Equalities and Human Rights Commission to manage a series of community-based events across the county this financial year.

The office is now buzzing as we start planning these projects — more details will be announced as our plans take shape, but we’re looking forward to an exciting and challenging time.

Meanwhile, we have sadly said good bye to staff members Sarah Gann (Information & Resources), Gill Heriz (Fundraiser) and Frances Tudor (Global Schools (UK) Project Coordinator). They will be much missed.

After 15 years, the World Shop ‘shut up shop’ on 22nd December 2007.

Described as a wonderful Aladdin’s cave of ethical goodies by Norfolk Magazine, The World Shop was ahead of its time — the first, and for a long time the only, BAFTS (British Association of Fair Trade Shops) registered Fair Trade outlet in Norfolk.

The shop championed Fair Trade goods in Norfolk, had a presence which linked into NEAD’s other work, such as Fair Trade Fortnight, and continued NEAD’s long tradition of working on trade justice issues.

FTiN (Fair Trade in Norfolk) is a voluntary group formed out of NEAD’s work around Fair Trade Fortnight. FTiN continues to actively promote Fair Trade across the county. They maintain a website, administer a mailing list, and produce the Fair Trade Guide to Norwich and Norfolk. The Guide, which can be viewed on their website, details outlets across Norfolk that pride themselves on selling Fair Trade products. FTiN, along with NEAD’s then Project Coordinator, Finbarr Carter, and a team of dedicated volunteers, were instrumental in achieving Fair Trade City status for Norwich in February 2005.

NEAD is proud of the achievements of its shop, of the role it has played in promoting and raising awareness about Fair Trade in this area, and the contact it has allowed us with the public. Other Fair Trade outlets now exist and we urge you to continue to support them. All’s Fair in Norwich and The Living Rooms in Framingham Earl are both now BAFTS-registered. We have worked with and wish to thank The Greenhouse for their support.

We express our heartfelt gratitude to all the volunteers who have done so much and enabled the shop to run over all these years. They have been involved at every level: staffing, ordering, stock-taking and promotions — we couldn’t have done it without them.

The World Shop has closed, but NEAD’s work continues apace!

NEAD is re-structuring, and as part of this re-structuring, The World Shop is closing down at Christmas. The World Shop's last day of trading will be Saturday 22nd December 2007, and we already have many items reduced.

Handmade fairly-traded paper

Our wonderful handmade fairly-traded paper is reduced to clear. A few sheets of it make a great gift for the Artist in your life! We have a range of colours, and some is made with leaves or flowers. It can be used for wrapping, or for making cards.

Many gift items

We have a range of fair-trade jewellery, much of which is reduced (some will remain at full price, being sale or return). There are many gift items, both large and small, such as earthenware pots, painted wooden animal sculptures, and an array of attractive keyrings and hair accessories. We have some lovely musical instruments, from small frog guiros, to thunder makers, and some fantastic djembes from Senegal, which are excellent quality. Our windchimes sound beautiful, come and try them. And of course we still have boxes of chocolates! Come and choose, while stocks last.

Book Sale

Browse in our Book Corner, where you will find Art books, books about different cultures, green issues, equality, fair trade. We have novels, poetry, books for teenagers, and lovely children's picture books introducing young children to many different cultures. We also have a Book Sale, with many books at half price.

Clothing, fairly-traded

Rummage baskets in the Sale Corner contain reduced t-shirts, trousers, and scarves.

Children's and adults' fair-trade organic t-shirts at reduced prices!

Our opening hours are: 10 AM to 5 PM, Monday to Saturday, and Thursdays 10 AM to 7 PM.

Fair Trade in Norfolk (FTiN) is an organisation that brings together charities, businesses, and individuals across Norfolk to effectively campaign for Fair Trade goals. Have a look at our website - www.fairtradenorfolk.org.uk - for more information.

There are lots of opportunities at the moment for volunteers to get involved! Fairtrade Fortnight is approaching (26th February to 11th March 2007) and we are particularly busy coordinating events and distributing our Guide to Fair Trade retailers in Norfolk.

We need volunteers able to:

• help distribute leaflets and copies of the Fair Trade Guide
• staff information stalls
• and help out at events during the Fortnight.

There are also ongoing opportunities for volunteers to help run campaigns, fundraise, and conduct research.
