EVENT: Inspiring Partnerships for Global Learning & Community Cohesion - GLOBAL THINKING Conference
www.dea.org.uk/events/item.asp?e=2440
The Global Thinking Conference 2010.
A FREE * conference for teachers, school leadership staff, local authority advisers and community organisations in the East of England.
Friday 9th July. 9.30am - 4pm. Faculty of Education, University of Cambridge.
Find out how education with a global dimension has enhanced teaching and learning within the East of England. Learn how partnerships between schools, local authorities and community based organisations have provided excellent opportunities for global learning and community cohesion. Be inspired and equipped to embed the global dimension within your own teaching and your whole school community.
Workshop 4
Community Cohesion and the Global Dimension in action, by Inna Da Costa and Kaja Holloway.
KS1, KS2 (activities can be adapted for KS3/KS4)
Inna Da Costa offers an interactive workshop incorporating dance and other tried and tested activities developed with children, teachers and the wider community members from primary schools in West Norfolk. The activities are developed from the NEAD’s ‘We are Norfolk’ project which supports teachers in responding to the educational challenges of working within a rapidly changing local community due to recent European migration and the associated tensions and opportunities this has created. The activities are designed to;
- enhance community cohesion though embedding global dimensions into the curriculum
- illustrate the benefits of working in partnership with the local community using a whole school approach
- show how the use of real world artifacts and World Voices can challenge (or sometimes reinforce) perceptions and stereotypes of other cultures.
Other workshops include:
- Active global learning – games and activities to engage young people in global learning
- Build it in … don’t bolt it on: How Global Thinking can raise standards in Literacy & Numeracy at Key Stage 2
- How do we know it’s working – Assessing global learning impact
Global Thinking is a regional strategy managed by the East of England Development Education Network to enable effective support for the global dimension in education, funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID).

Community Cohesion in schools presentation by Kaja Holloway.
Aims & Objectives
“We must make sure community cohesion becomes part of every school’s ethos to celebrate diversity and recognise common values. There’ll be different challenges for different schools but it’s now on the agenda for them all.”
Adrian Gray, Head of Institutional Inspections and Frameworks, Ofsted
With Ofsted examining how schools are contributing to community cohesion as part of their inspection process, it is imperative that school leaders, local authorities and their partners share ideas on how to fulfil their duty to promote community cohesion.
Capita’s 4th National Community Cohesion in Schools Conference looks at current progress and innovative practice enabling schools to meet this criteria and receive outstanding ratings.
This conference will address the following important issues:
- Engaging parents and young people in the community cohesion initiative
- Developing links with the wider community and creating local partnerships
- Closing the generation gap
- Establishing partnerships with faith communities
- Keeping young people safe
Delivered through informative plenary sessions and practical case studies, this conference provides an excellent opportunity to assess current strategies and hear best practice on which to benchmark your own provision. Attend this timely event to discover how you can strengthen procedures in community cohesion.
Benefits of Attending
- Hear a Government update on the duty to promote community cohesion in schools as outlined in Ofsted's new inspection framework
- Benefit from practical advice on how to achieve outstanding results for your Ofsted inspections
- Learn how to deliver safe and cohesive communities
- Identify how you can link with community partners to promote cohesion in your area
- Find out the key differences between rural and urban communities and how to overcome challenges for achieving cohesion in different settings

NEAD AGM 2008
Our speaker, Humphrey Moyo, is a World Voice, who has volunteered with NEAD in various ways since 2006.
World Voices are dynamic educators bringing knowledge of their countries, cultures, and of the process of coming to the UK. World Voices are part of a joint learning process, opening up dialogue between points of view.
Humphrey was a Head Teacher in Zimbabwe for 20 years, forced to leave in 2002. Finally granted Refugee status in 2004, he now lives, studies and works in Norwich with ‘limited leave to remain’ until 2011. His story is important. Come and hear it at first hand!
In 2007, Benny Wenda addressed our AGM, highlighting the Free West Papua Campaign.

Refugee Week 2007
18 – 24 June 2007
No-one chooses to be a refugee in a strange land, but sometimes people are forced to flee their homes because of war or the risk of persecution. Many face torture, imprisonment and even death. Most refugees are unable to choose their destination country. They hope to return to their home country in the future.
Refugee Week celebrates the enormous contribution that Refugees and Asylum Seekers make to the UK. This year’s activities for Refugee Week in Norfolk are being coordinated by John Thompson on behalf of the Norwich Asylum Seeker and Refugee Forum (NASREF) along with a range of partners. Be sure to check out the programme of events and activities.

Black History Season
18 September – 9 November 2006
Zimbabwean Anna Mudeka set up Tambai Promotions in 2001 to promote music from other cultures through the Arts. The name tambai derives from the Shona word meaning to dance.
This year Tambai Promotions has brought together a unique and truly eclectic troupe of musicians and performers, who tour educational establishments around the East of England. Each artist is dedicated to perpetuating access to rich cultures and traditions, through fun and educational workshops and performances.
More information is available about the new workshops and performances being promoted by Tambai Promotions for a Black History Season, from 18th September to 12th November 2006 (PDF file).
For more information about Black History Month which takes place in October, see Norfolk Black History Month website.

Black History Month 2006
18 September – 9 November 2006
Black History Month (BHM) is held every October in Britain to promote knowledge of Black history and experience. Although this is only the fourth year that BHM has been celebrated in Norfolk there are more than 50 events planned.
BHM provides an opportunity to share knowledge of our common human ancestry in Africa and of the continuous presence of Black people in Britain for at least 500 years. We should be aware of people such as Mary Seacole, a Black nurse in the Crimea at the same time as Florence Nightingale and, in her time, also famous and fêted. Locally, it should be well known that the first Black British circus owner, Pablo Fanque, was born in Norwich in 1798 and that Britain’s first Black Mayor, Allen Minns, was elected in Thetford in 1904.
Look out for a full programme of theatre, dance, film, visual arts, seminars, poetry and music being promoted by Norfolk Education and Action for Development (NEAD) and Norwich and Norfolk Racial Equality Council (NNREC). Visit the website for full details and up-to-date listings: http://www.norfolkblackhistorymonth.org.uk.
If you would like to get involved in helping with BHM contact Finbarr at NEAD on 01603 610993.

Fair Trade in Norfolk AGM 2006
Nick Saltmarsh, East Anglian Food Link, will explore the links between Fairtrade and supporting local farmers; fair trading and working conditions are important for producers and food industry workers in the developed as well as the developing world. Our buying choices have a real impact yet the labelling of food provides little guidance on socially responsible purchasing when it comes to products from the UK and the rest of the developed world. How can we help create fairer conditions for all food workers?
Nigel Dowdney from the Localise IT campaign will be talking from the point of view of an independent retailer at the receiving end of Tesco's aggressive expansion; who as a result has started a campaign in partnership with several other organisations in order to try and further the important message of Local Business, Local Profit, Local Economy, Local Well-being; or how well do you utilise your pound coin for your own benefit?
Fairly traded refreshments will be available on the night.
NB: Please respond to Finbarr Carter (on 01603 610993) as to whether you can or can't make it so they can plan accordingly.
