  • First Global English film hits YouTube

    Anastasy can be enjoyed on NEAD's YouTube channel, here: www.youtube.com/user/NEADorgUK

    The film will be shown on the huge digital screen at Fusion, in The Forum, Norwich as part of BBC Norfolk's Children & Young People's Film Festival from Monday 18th - Friday 29th, 10am - 5pm

    The film addresses the consequences of ignoring racism. In this case the victim is a Polish incommer to the school. Everything does not end well... here, unlike in real life, those responsible get a second chance to 'do the right thing'.

    The film is the end of year product of Great Yarmouth's involvement in NEAD's Global English project - improving speaking and listening through exploring issues of concern to young people locally and globally - in Norfolk secondary schools. Find out about the project, and how you can get mini-Global English projects for YOUR school, youth group or organisation, here: www.nead.org.uk/Projects/global_english

    We think the film is imaginative and quirky. The closing frames leave you with a current statistic about the racist incidents which were reported in Norfolk, and the campaign slogan: NEVER IGNORE RACISM!

  • The Norfolk Flood Blues!

    David McAlmont – nationally acclaimed singer, songwriter and performer extraordinaire – brought his unique voice to Gorleston in collaboration with NEAD and Norfolk Black History Month on 19th of October.

     David worked with pupils from Peterhouse Primary School, which David attended in the 1970’s, to create an original Blues piece: The Norfolk Flood Blues, based on Gorleston’s experience of flooding.

    Peterhouse children from years 3 and 4 took part in The Windmill Project, part of We Are Norfolk East, funded by DfID (Department for International Development). The project helps children get to grips with the challenge of climate change – locally and globally. David worked with children from years 5 and 6 to create a song about flood; a very real issue for these children living on the coast.

     “This is the most amazing opportunity for Peterhouse, David’s story, like his voice, is extraordinary and inspiring. This is an experience the children will never forget. David’s example shows just what is possible, if you dream big and aim high.” says Rosie Walker, Project Coordinator, We Are Norfolk: EAST. As well as performing for the children and their families David is keen to talk with the children about their aspirations. David wants to make sure today’s Peterhouse pupils know that their dreams can become realities.

     David is of Guyanese / Nigerian heritage, born in Croydon, UK. His work has been influenced by living in Guyana and collaborations with artists including ex-Suede guitarist Bernard Butler and Oscar winning composer Michael Nyman, who headlined this year’s Norfolk and Norwich Festival.

  • NEW NEAD PROJECT:                        Global English

    Alison Thomas,

    Norfolk County Council Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said:

    We are strong believers in NEAD’s work and value the role they play in supporting young people’s understanding and appreciation of Norfolk’s diverse communities.

    We are delighted to be part of this project and to have been able to support this bid, which links closely with our ambitions to raise attainment and celebrate multi-cuturalism across the county.

    Developing students understanding of the wider world is vital if we want to raise young people’s aspirations and encourage them to think about the differences they can make, not only to their local community, but to their county, country and world.”

  • Teachers’ TV showcase We Are Norfolk

    They followed a year 4 group from St. Martha's Primary, King's Lynn. In the classroom  they learned about saris and dance steps, while also using maths to work out how to live on a low income budget similar to some families in Calcutta. The work was guded by NEAD World Voice, Sohana Zaman, who lives locally but has Indian heritage.

    The culmination of the project was 1 World Day at Lynnsport, an event with five other local schools, where they demonstrate the traditional Indian dance that they had learned and watched what the other schools had been doing.  Parents, educational workers and the local community also attended the event.

     6 other countries were examined by 6 other primary schools in the West of Norfolk, including Brazil, China, Lithuania, Portugal and Russia.

    The whole day was also filmed by NEAD and the DVD of the finale as well as step-by-step dance and cookery activities, led by the 6 World Voices, can be bought from NEAD. Email: info@nead.org.uk  The activities can be copied in your classroom or the World Voices can come in and take your class through it themselves.  The costumes, country's artefacts and further lesson plans are available to loan, for FREE from NEAD's libraries!

    Footage archived from Teacher's TV can now be viwed online here: www.teachersmedia.co.uk/videos/primary-global-citizenship-from-king-lynn-to-india

  • New NEAD DVD Resource!

    The We Are Norfolk: West project in King’s Lynn saw NEAD’s World Voices visiting six local primary schools. Six different countries were explored in terms of their geography, history, culture, traditional costume, music, dance and food. The cookery and dance activities are highlighted in 12 short films, guided step-by-step by the World Voices. Each activity increases pupils’ understanding of different countries and cultures. After the World Voices’ visits the schools came together at a One World Day celebration to share what they had learned, produced and rehearsed. The pupils’ traditional dance presentations, in full traditional costume, also feature on the DVD. Making Connections DVD, available to order from NEAD. Cost £10 (or HALF PRICE to member schools, Primary membership – £30 per year). For further details NEAD.

  • New East Norfolk project following success of We Are Norfolk: West

    For the last year, NEAD has been working hard in King’s Lynn and West Norfolk setting up and managing our innovative We Are Norfolk project. Now, we have been given a great endorsement of its success with the news that with funding from DFID we will be able to extend the project in the East of the county too.

    The project enables us to work closely with all the primary schools in the region, supporting global learning in the classroom across the full range of curriculum subjects. We will also work with local people from different backgrounds to meet their training needs and develop their skills to become classroom facilitators, exploring the similarities and differences between different cultures using music, dance, food, arts and a range of fun activities. Opportunities to support links between schools and communities, both local and global, will be taken, and we hope to continue to be part of local events and activities with a global or community theme.

  • Tell MPs we want a fair Olympics

    Labour Behind the Label & the TUC are calling for the rights of workers producing merchandise for London's 2012 Olympic Games to be respected. Ask your MP to sign a parliamentary Early Day Motion to show support for this campaign!

    What's the campaign about?

    Sponsorship and merchandise for the Olympic Games is worth hundreds of millions of pounds. Meanwhile, workers who produce sportswear and merchandise, wherever they are, are denied their basic rights. LBL, as part of the global Playfair campaign, wants London 2012 to raise the bar on ethical trading for all goods bearing the Olympic logo, ensuring that workers' rights are respected throughout Olympic supply chains.

    What should my MP do?

    Please ask him or her to sign Early Day Motion (EDM) 1309, which is the equivalent of a parliamentary petition, in support of our campaign. It's a good idea to check to see if your MP has signed it already, in which case you can still ask her or him to contact the Olympic Minster, Tessa Jowell, to show support.

    What does the EDM say?

    The motion is as follows:

    • That this House recognises the importance of taking a stand against abuses of workers' rights;
    • believes that all who work to make London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games a success should have the right to decent work, living wages, and all provisions of the International Labour Organisation's (ILO) core conventions;
    • appreciates the opportunity the Games present to set an example of ethical trading;
    • welcomes the progress made by the organisers of the Games so far, their statement that suppliers and licensees will be required to comply with the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) base code, and their involvement with the Suppliers Ethical Data Exchange;
    • notes that similar such commitments at previous Olympic Games have not been particularly successful due to a lack of effective monitoring and remediation measures;
    • and consequently urges the Government to use its influence within the Olympic Board to ensure that contractual arrangements are in place that hold all manufacturers of official merchandise, equipment and clothing for the Games to account for the conditions in which they are produced, according to the standards of the ETI base code.
  • NEAD is pleased to announce new funding!

    NEAD has been successful in a large-scale funding application; the Department for International Development has awarded money for work in King’s Lynn and West Norfolk in Primary Schools, on issues around ‘new communities’ (economic migrants, BME communities , refugees and asylum seekers, etc.), for 3 years.

    We also received some funding from the Equalities and Human Rights Commission to manage a series of community-based events across the county this financial year.

    The office is now buzzing as we start planning these projects — more details will be announced as our plans take shape, but we’re looking forward to an exciting and challenging time.

    Meanwhile, we have sadly said good bye to staff members Sarah Gann (Information & Resources), Gill Heriz (Fundraiser) and Frances Tudor (Global Schools (UK) Project Coordinator). They will be much missed.

    Watch this space for details of what NEAD is doing, fundraising events and an upcoming job vacancy.

  • End of an Era: The World Shop Closes

    After 15 years, the World Shop ‘shut up shop’ on 22nd December 2007.

    Described as a wonderful Aladdin’s cave of ethical goodies by Norfolk Magazine, The World Shop was ahead of its time — the first, and for a long time the only, BAFTS (British Association of Fair Trade Shops) registered Fair Trade outlet in Norfolk.

    The shop championed Fair Trade goods in Norfolk, had a presence which linked into NEAD’s other work, such as Fair Trade Fortnight, and continued NEAD’s long tradition of working on trade justice issues.

    FTiN (Fair Trade in Norfolk) is a voluntary group formed out of NEAD’s work around Fair Trade Fortnight. FTiN continues to actively promote Fair Trade across the county. They maintain a website, administer a mailing list, and produce the Fair Trade Guide to Norwich and Norfolk. The Guide, which can be viewed on their website, details outlets across Norfolk that pride themselves on selling Fair Trade products. FTiN, along with NEAD’s then Project Coordinator, Finbarr Carter, and a team of dedicated volunteers, were instrumental in achieving Fair Trade City status for Norwich in February 2005.

    NEAD is proud of the achievements of its shop, of the role it has played in promoting and raising awareness about Fair Trade in this area, and the contact it has allowed us with the public. Other Fair Trade outlets now exist and we urge you to continue to support them. All’s Fair in Norwich and The Living Rooms in Framingham Earl are both now BAFTS-registered. We have worked with and wish to thank The Greenhouse for their support.

    We express our heartfelt gratitude to all the volunteers who have done so much and enabled the shop to run over all these years. They have been involved at every level: staffing, ordering, stock-taking and promotions — we couldn’t have done it without them.

    The World Shop has closed, but NEAD’s work continues apace!
