Trustees
Richard Patey
Since 2010 I have been running my social purpose company called Profit Is Good that supports social enterprises and charities to scale their social impact through profitable business models and good design. Prior to that I worked in a business development capacity at the then supported employment charity Meridian East and prior to that as Funding Adviser of the now Voluntary Norfolk. It was volunteering for NEAD back in 2001 after finishing a business degree that inspired me to do a masters in International Development at UEA and subsequently enabled me to get my first job in the charity sector.

I am a Senior Solicitor at Mills & Reeve LLP in Norwich and have always felt strongly about education and development. The way that NEAD makes significant, global issues relevant and accessible is vital for ensuring that people in Norfolk have a deeper understanding of their part in the global community. As well as being a trustee of NEAD, I am a trustee of The Garage in Norwich and have previously been a trustee of the New Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich. I look forward to being able to use the professional skills and experiences that I have developed for the benefit of an organisation that is as important as NEAD.

Whilst in parliament I was involved in enquiries into food security including how science and technology could support development in countries that I have visited, such as Malawi. My wife also worked in development for many years, and I got to know her as an academic at UEA. I remember a Professor of Biochemistry, teaching about starvation challenging whether students should be sent to study it in other countries, to find the causes. He said that it was nothing to do with science, and a waste of time. This was like a red rag to a bull for me and tackling attitudes such as this have been a major reason why I have seen science and technology to be of relevance to the improvement of people's lives in the field of development.

Since settling in Norwich in 1995 as Director of Education at the Chapelfield Mosque I have constantly been engaged in local issues and community initiatives of various kinds. My interest in NEAD’s work stems from its unique attempt to make awareness of global economic development issues locally relevant and accessible through its educational and partnership activities.

I have spent my working and living life in a multi-cultural community, actively involved in working towards improving race relations and the integration of refugee communities. I recently retired as head of a West London further education college and returned to Norwich, my home city. I am currently working as a consultant, specialising in organisation development and undertaking the design and evaluation of new approaches to social inclusion and economic regeneration. Over the past three years I have enjoyed making a small contribution to NEAD and look forward to getting more involved as a trustee.

I grew up in Denmark and spent year in Japan before coming to UEA where I graduated in 1992 with a degree in Development Studies and then in 1994 with an MA from the School of Education. I then worked at NEAD from 1994 to 2002 on a range of projects, mostly on the fair trade and community side of NEAD’s work and really enjoyed it. I am glad for the opportunity, as a Trustee, to hopefully give something back to NEAD. I have, since leaving NEAD, also become a Director of Labour Behind the Label. I am now working as an independent financial adviser specialising in ethical investments. I am also involved with the local Danish Society and Christian Aid.

I am the elected Green Party County Councillor for Mancroft Ward, since June 2009. I am spokesperson on Children's Services for the Green Party County Councillors, and am active as a campaigner for sustainable transport and organic agriculture. I work as an Associate Tutor for the Norfolk school Governor training service. I am a LA appointed Governor at Angel Road First School, currently in special measures. I am Chairman of Norfolk Organic Group - a local group of SA & HDRA, and am a council member for the national body HDRA. I am also the Treasurer for Norwich Cycling Campaign, involved in the NoNDR campaign, the Campaign against climate change, a director of Norwich Agenda 21, and member of the City Council's Environment Round Table. I have also been a shop and cafe volunteer at The Greenhouse. I am a keen gardener, domestically and paid casual gardening work. In the winter months I organise voluntary coppicing groups. I think that NEAD with its' educational and developing country links complements my other group involvements, and I hope my skills learnt on various committees' or management bodies from those would be useful to the organisation. I look forward to joining a well respected organisation like NEAD as a trustee, and learning more about its work both with local schools and highlighting links to overseas.

I feel I have been on the fringes of NEAD activities for many years. I have a health and education background having qualified as a nurse and a health visitor and a teacher. My working life has therefore been very varied, including being a health visitor at the Elephant and Castle in London, a lollipop lady in Botswana, (their first!) and a teacher at a middle school in Norfolk. Since November 2003 I have been working as part of the Norfolk Healthy Schools team, which supports schools work in promoting all aspects of health and well-being.
